In this design studio course, emphasis is placed on active participation and learning-through-experience, requiring an iterative process of making and discourse throughout the term. The course introduces core principles and foundational skills in space, form, and site through design and representation. Students will reinforce design principles, introduced in A312, and learn to consider the site as both a social and physical context. The course is structured to model the process of independently managing a single project, from conception to a developed architectural proposal within a semester. Instructors act as project managers, guiding design ambitions, meeting deadlines, and maintaining a manageable scope. Students will design with basic building elements—frame, envelope, space, and site—developing simplicity into architectural and representational complexity. The course also emphasizes representation as a key agent in design and development, introducing advanced skills and techniques.Students will focus on the following skills:Understanding and altering topographic conditions to enhance site and building design.Analyzing environmental conditions to create proposals with natural light, climate flexibility, and sensitive siting.Considering program organization in relation to situational context and structure.Developing design proposals informed by program and site analysis.
